Giving back, making a difference

Grants that support and nurture our community

The Grants Committee provides grants to individuals and community organizations that align with the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation educational and charitable mission to promote research-based horticultural and environmental stewardship and education.

Since 2004, the Grants Committee has awarded grants — $1,000 or less — to support community gardens, schools, small farms, scholarships, and individual training. Grant funds cover project materials and supplies as well as tuition scholarships and other courses of study for individuals consistent with the mission of Master Gardener Foundation.

Grants awarded in 2023

Irondale Soup Kitchen Garden

Irondale Church has offered free soup on Tuesdays to community members since 2011. More recently, a vegetable garden was created on the grounds to grow fresh vegetables and provide more control of ingredients that nurture those without the means to use area food banks or to cook their own food. The grant for fencing and irrigation inspired additional donations from individuals so that irrigation, fencing, seeds, plants, soil, and tools could be purchased for the soup kitchen garden project.

North Beach Community Garden

After 18 years, holes and rips were appearing in the fence around the North Beach Community Garden. The Master Gardener Foundation approved funds for materials; garden volunteers and neighbors provided the labor to complete another successful project. The Foundation is proud to assist in keeping our community members growing, learning and working together.

Shooting Star Farm

To conduct winter gardening trials, grant money was used to purchase seeds, cover cloth, supplies for supporting and securing row covers for vegetables appropriate for winter harvesting in Jefferson County. Several varieties of 25 vegetables were grown over winter with cover options: uncovered, floating row cover, hoop house and some combinations. Two public presentations of the field trials were presented to the community.

Swan Food Bank Garden & Pea Patch

While a solar fan installation is making the hoop house at Swan Farm more functional for year-round use, a new hoop house door and double entry gates help secure tools and equipment, and protect the garden from vandalism and misuse when gardeners are not present.
